A study has revealed that individuals who drink sugary beverages regularly are more likely to have a smaller brain volume, poorer memory, and a significantly smaller hippocampus, the brain area important for memory and learning.[1]A second study revealed that individuals who drank diet soda every day were nearly 3 times as likely to develop stroke and dementia in comparison to individuals who didn’t.[2]
Excess sugar consumption is linked to cardiovascular diseases as well as metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and heart disease, but there is not much known with regards to the long-term effects it has on our brains.
